From fantastical flavors to tempting toppings to crazy cones we’ve gathered eight of the best Chicago ice cream experiences in the city to help make your National Ice Cream Day more interesting.
Table of Contents
Fruity Plush Cone
Where: The Plush Horse, 12301 South 86th Avenue, Palos Park
There’s plenty to be excited about when you take a trip to Palos Park for ice cream at The Plush Horse. However, what has us the most excited is the recent addition of the Fruity Plush Cone as an ice cream delivery vehicle. This cone features fruit loops baked into the cone and is a perfect accompaniment to the iconic Superman ice cream (or the brand new Wonder Woman ice cream).
#YouSalty
Where: George’s Ice Cream and Sweets, 5306 North Clark Street
The best ice cream news this month is that #yousalty is now a regular fixture on George’s menu. This is truly a win for ice cream lovers. #YouSalty is salty caramel with veins of salty chocolate throughout. If those flavor combinations are your thing (and why wouldn’t they be, weirdo) this ice cream is divine.
Old Fashioned Banana Split
Where: Margie’s Candies, 1960 N Western Ave.
Sure, sure, banana splits are easy to come by most anywhere in Chicago, but no one, and I do mean NO ONE, does it like Margie’s. Why? Probably because Margie’s could have been feeding these very same banana splits to your grandparents when they were kids. Eating one of these is like taking a Master Class in splits. Check out the photo below and go get one for your belly.
Cubby Crunch
Where: Bobtail Ice Cream Company, 2951 N Broadway
This is the height of baseball season and the best way to rally for our cubbies is by eating Bobtail’s Cubby Crunch. This colorful concoction combines vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, oreo, chocolate chips, and toffee.
Lucky Charms Topping
Where: Cone Gourmet Ice Cream, 1047 W Madison Street
When it comes to creative toppings it’s hard to, uh, top Cone. The West Loop ice cream shop produces some of the most instagrammable options in the city thanks, mostly, to rolling your cone in Lucky Charms. Who said you can’t eat ice cream for breakfast?
Blue Raspberry Dipped Topping
Where: Dairy Star Ice Cream, 3472 W. Devon Ave, Lincolnwood
We go from the outlandish to the simple. Dairy Star keeps it old school with the toppings but that doesn’t mean they don’t have flair. All of the dips make for a striking cone, but the blue raspberry dip is the true winner. Find yourself a nice pink wall and you’ll have the coolest picture on Instagram.
Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel
Where: Black Dog Gelato, multiple locations
This Black Dog classic should be in a Chicago Ice Cream 101 class. If you haven’t tried it yet you don’t really have a true understanding of the greatness that is Chicago ice cream.
Cardamom Ice Cream w/Rhubarb Sauce
Where: Ruth and Phils Gourmet Ice Cream, 2636 W Chicago Ave
Ruth and Phils has mastered the art of seasonal ice cream. This summer they’ve given us the brilliant combination of cardamom ice cream with a shock of rhubarb sauce cutting through the center. Take this one to a quiet park and ponder life.
Bonus: Paletas de Aqua
Where: La Michoacana Premium, multiple locations
I tried my best to avoid chains for this piece(which is why Jeni’s, Chocolate Shoppe, and Graeter’s didn’t make the cut) , but it’s difficult to post about Instagrammable ice cream experiences in Chicago without dropping the popsicles at La Michoacana Premium. Chunky fruit makes these popsicles pop with character and color.
